The Bible has 2 parts: the Old Testament of 39 books, in this translation shall be color coded Blue to look up more easily, written before the Savior of the world came, and the New Testament of 27 books, color coded Red, written after the Savior has come. Also, each book shall also have a number, put in brackets in front of its name to show its position in the Old Testament or the New Testament. For example:
[01] Genesis 2:3-7 is the 01st book of the Old Testament (blue), chapter 2, verse 3 to verse 7.
[27] Revelation 12:17 is the 27th book of the New Testament (red), chapter 12, verse 17.
To those reading the Bible for the first time, this is the order of reading that I would recommend:
- First, read the first lesson in the Prophecy Encyclopedia that is placed in the Menu on top of the website, named “The Vision of Ages“, explaining the vision in the 2nd chapter of the 27th book of the Old Testament, [27] Daniel 2. This one chapter + one lesson should be enough to forever secure with actual evidence a foundation for your faith in the existence and Sovereignty of God, and that the Bible really is His Word, so you can rest assured about the path you are heading and aggressively advance in the study of God’s Word.
- Then, proceed to read the 3rd book of the New Testament, [03] Luke, contains the most complete account of the life of Christ among the first 4 books of the New Testament, which are called the 4 Gospels, the testimonies of various eye-witnesses of the life of the Savior of the World.
- Then, read the 5th book of the New Testament, [05] Acts. This book has the same author Luke, relate the story of the early church right after what happened in [03] Luke. That’s why among the 4 Gospels, you should pick [03] Luke so the storyline can continue most seamlessly to [05] Acts.
- Then return to the Old Testament, read through them all.
- Finally, read the rest of the New Testament.
That is what I would advise, but readers don’t necessarily have to follow that reading order. If the Lord inspires you to read certain books first, more adapted to your spiritual conditions to solve certain problems you are encountering, then by all means, follow His lead. However, I have this caution for you: finish reading whole books before moving on to another book, so that at least your knowledge about the general storyline throughout the Bible won’t be fragmented, but as time passes, you can finish reading the whole Bible.
Please read and understand the Bible according to the literal meaning that it says. Only in passages where it has plainly declared that it is using figurative languages (like parables or visions using symbolic languages), shall it be understood figuratively, with each symbol explained using the very meanings that the Bible itself has provided. Most twisted explanations of the Bible fall into these 4 categories:
1) Taking figurative passages literally.
2) Taking literal passages figuratively, deliberately imagine up meanings for the verses that they were not saying at all.
3) Explaining the meaning of the symbols in figurative passages falsely, due to not using the meanings the Bible itself has provided for those symbols, but other explanations from outer sources.
4) Taking verses out of their contexts, and then build up a whole heap of doctrines based on the separated verses. One need only to insert the separated verse back into the context and read up the whole passage to figure out what that verse actually says.
[06] Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein DAY and NIGHT, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
“Day and night” would mean at least twice a day – IN THE MORNING after waking up and AT NIGHT before going to sleep, for example – spend time to read and meditate upon this most important, most powerful book ever circulated among men.
The Bible has a total of 1189 chapters. If you can spend no more than 30 minutes/day to read about 2 chapters in the morning and 2 chapters at night, it won’t take you longer than a year to complete your first read-through.
So read AT LEAST 4 chapters/day. Commit yourself to the task, don’t even go to sleep before you finish your daily 4 chapters. Whenever you forget, make up for it the next day. Even when you encounter passages that you don’t understand, read on, and keep advancing daily. The keys to unlock previously clouded passages shall be found in later passages. That is how the Lord designed the Holy Bible, to test the commitment of those who seek the Truth, and reward those who are persistent. I myself had finished my first read-through in about 6 months. I believe many can do even better.
May the Lord bless all those who are committed to study this book of His daily. As for the list of corruptions of other texts, click this link.
